Check the file you downloaded
Run shasum -a 256 on the downloaded file. It should print:

Installing it
- Open the downloaded KeyExpander-1.2.1.dmg file. It opens as a window with the Key Expander icon in it.
- Drag the Key Expander icon onto the Applications shortcut in that same window.
- Open Key Expander from your Applications folder. macOS will ask for Accessibility permission the first time - grant it, since that is what lets Key Expander see a trigger being typed and expand it. Nothing you type is stored beyond the moment it needs to spot a trigger.

What Free covers
Free is 5 snippets that expand, in plain text, on one machine, for as long as you like. Write as many snippets as you want: every one of them is saved and editable, 5 of them expand, and you choose which 5 at any time.
Your free snippets live on that one machine and nowhere else. There is no sync and no copy of them on our servers, so if the machine is lost the snippets are lost with it. That is the honest reason to subscribe rather than a limit invented to push you.
An account is required to use Key Expander at all, free or paid, and you sign in the first time you open the app. The pricing page has what a license adds, including sync across five machines.
