The things worth knowing before you pay
- What happens if I stop paying?
You go back to the free plan. Nothing is deleted: every snippet you wrote is still saved, still editable and still on your own machine. 5 of them keep expanding, and you choose which 5. Sync stops, and the paid features stop, until you subscribe again.
- Can I move it to another machine?
Changing machines? Deactivate the old one from inside the app and the slot comes straight back. If the machine is gone - sold, lost, wiped - write to us and we will free the slot for you.
- Do I get the other platforms when they ship?
Yes, at no extra cost, for as long as you are subscribed. No date is promised for anything that is not available today, and nothing on this page is a commitment that it will arrive. The commitment is narrower and it is one we can keep: if it does arrive, you will not be asked to pay again for it.
- Can I get a refund?
There is nothing to refund before you pay. Key Expander is free forever on one machine, with 5 snippets that expand, so you can use it for as long as you like before deciding. Our full refund policy explains what happens once you have subscribed.
- What do you store about me?
An account is required to use Key Expander, so we hold your email address and which plan you are on. On the free plan the app sends us nothing about your snippets: they stay in a file on your own machine and there is no copy of them on our servers. With an active subscription your snippets sync, which sends their text to us so that your devices can share one library, and you can switch that off in the app's settings. What we store either way, and why, is set out in full in our privacy statement.
- What happens to my snippets if you disappear?
They are in an ordinary SQLite file on the machine you installed the app on, at ~/Library/Application Support/KeyExpander/snippets.db, and any SQLite tool will open it and read the text out. Your snippets are on a server only while sync is on, and nothing you write is ever locked in a format only we can read.
Being straight about the other half: the app checks your subscription with our server, so if we vanished entirely it would stop expanding once it could no longer check. That is exactly why the file on your own machine matters, and it is the honest reason to prefer a tool that keeps your text in a file you can open yourself.
